Duodenal Switch and SADI

Duodenal switch surgery is the latest treatment for those suffering from obesity. By removing part of the stomach, and changing the channel through which nutrients pass in the lower intestine, we can change the process of digestion. Digestion of protein and fat only occurs in the lower portion (approximately seven feet) of the lower intestines. This surgery is meant for people who are very obese, haven’t been able to lose weight, and have a BMI (body mass index) of 50 or higher.

Advantages of Duodenal Switch

  • Less invasive with a relatively short recovery time
  • Favorable long term results for weight loss and diabetes
  • Safer than traditional duodenal switch procedure
  • Effective procedure to lower cholesterol and triglycerides

Our New Jersey weight loss surgery experts are committed to providing you with the best individualized care and solutions the profession has to offer.

Why Is Duodenal Switch performed?

SIPS is easier to perform and diminishes the diarrhea and nutritional deficiencies seen with the original duodenal switch, while also helping patients lose a lot of weight. This procedure is for severely obese people who are not able to lose weight with regular methods. Most surgeons will not perform SIPS surgery unless you are super-obese (BMI of 50 or higher) and your weight is causing serious health problems. Even after surgery, you will still need to eat healthy foods and exercise to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

How Well Does It Work?

SIPS is very effective. Most people lose 75 to 80 percent of their excess weight and stay at their new weight. Long-term studies show that many people gain back 20 to 25 percent of the weight they lost after other procedures. Those who achieve the highest success follow the recommended exercise and eating plan and have regular visits with their medical team.

For additional information, all prospective patients are invited to attend a free educational seminar.
Seminars are a great source of information about the procedure you are considering, and they allow you to meet the surgeons as well as ask any questions you may have. You may also have the opportunity to meet some post-operative patients.
